More books have been written about India than probably any other single country, such is the spell cast by this intriguing subcontinent. The genesis of Examining India was the diary my wife, Pat, and I kept during my sixteen-week music examination tour for Trinity College London in 1999. I worked in schools, music studios and private homes on an itinerary that took us from the shadows of the Himalayas to the backwaters of Kerala. The schedule allowed us time to visit temples, mosques, palaces, beaches and historic buildings. We witnessed classical dancing, public demonstrations, endless informal cricket matches and the grinding poverty of the streets. Above all, we discovered the friendliness of the Indian people, their spontaneity and generosity, their dignity and courtesy. I hope something of the love we developed for this fascinating country has been captured in the book.
